Swedish Vallhund

History

Known as the "Viking Dog", this little breed has been around for over 1,500 years. Born in Sweden and raised on farms, this breed is an excellent farm and herding breed, watch dog and companion that is still used for the same great qualities, today.

Appearance

Appearing similar to the "Corgi" breed, the Swedish Vallhund is stocky, long and low to the ground. With two small triangular ears that stand straight up, a small wedge shaped skull directly leading into a tiny scissor bite muzzle and four short legs, this breed is ready to get to work! Their coat is a double layer, short coat that is very dense and comes in shade variations of wolf gray, to blonde and brown with darker gray markings throughout the coat. Both males and females measure 11-13 inches in height and weight. Please note that typically this breed has a "mask" of darker shading on his or her face. Their two almond shaped eyes are available is dark brown or black only. Their tail is thick and short and should be curled up towards their back.

Temperament

This little breed is very courageous, determined, strong and full of endurance. A wonderful addition to any family with other pets, elderly, children and other dogs as long as raised along side of them, this breed loves working as much as it loves showing its affection for you. This breed requires positive reinforcement training methods only, and must be taught boundaries and rules while young. This breed needs to be both mentally and physically exercised daily to ensure proper health and a well behaved dog. A daily walk along with other play time, and time for tricks or other mental stimulation is recommended. Overall this breed is a wonderful companion, quick learner and wonderful farm dog. Suited well for both apartment and country living.

Grooming

This breed requires daily brushing and bathing when needed.

Special Notes

Please fully educate yourself about the Swedish Vallhund prior to adding one to your family to ensure that you are able to make a life long commitment to your new pet. Do not add this breed to your family unless you are able to provide proper care, training and requirements that this breed needs. All dogs originate from wolves (Canis Lupus). Each breed of dog was originally created by mixing different breeds together in an effort to bring forth certain characteristics. Once a breeder has created acceptable “breed characteristics” within their bloodline and these “breed characteristics” have shown to be reliably reproduced in the offspring for three (3) generations, the bloodline may be upgraded from the category of “foundation stock” to “pure-bred”. The same “pure-bred” breed standards vary from different continents, countries, territories, regions, breed clubs, and canine pure-breed registries depending on the goals of their breeders. Dog DNA testing companies can have accurate results for a specific bloodline of a small colony of dogs. However, there are tens of thousands of different bloodlines in the world which have not yet been tested for marker baseline results by Dog DNA testing companies as of 2017. For this reason Dog DNA testing companies do not guarantee the 100% accuracy of their breed lineage results and will also show different marker results for the same pure-bred breed in different continents, countries, territories, regions, breed clubs, and canine pure-breed registries depending on the goals of their breeders.
