Fox Terrier

History

There are two types of Fox Terrier's; Wire Hair Fox Terrier and Smooth Hair Fox Terrier. There is a size difference as well as personality differences between the two. Smooth Hair Fox Terrier - After crossing several breeds including the English Hound, Fox Hound, Dachshund, and Beagle, finally originated the Smooth Fox Terrier. One of the oldest of Terrier types, this breed dates back to the 17th century. Used for hunting small rodents and Fox who were after farm owners live stock, this breed was very good at its job. This breed was not the "hunting" type, but would rather find the prey, and make quite the ruckus with barking and digging, alarming the owner to come over and trap the prey that the Smooth Fox Terrier would find. Today, this breed is used for hunting, tracking, preforming tricks and agility.

Appearance

Smooth Hair Fox Terrier - Similar to a Jack Russell, the Smooth Fox Terrier is a solid small breed, built with a lot of muscle. With a thin, wedge shaped head forming into a scissor bite muzzle, this breed has short triangular ears that fold over and down on either side of its face. The Smooth Fox Terrier has short hair that should always carry a natural shine and is only available in white with black or brown markings on top. This breed is extremely hardy with sturdy small feet, a long firm tail, and strong hind legs. Males should measure 14-16 inches in height and weigh in around 15-20 pounds, while females should measure 13-15 inches in height and measure in 13-18 pounds in weight.

Temperament

Smooth Hair Fox Terrier - This breed is not meant for every household. Though extremely friendly, cheerful, loving and playful, this breed can be a little too rough around small children, and cannot live with non-canine pets. Easy to train, however if not given a proper amount of exercise daily, this breed can become stubborn and very pushy. It is highly recommended to always keep this breed on a leash or within a fenced in area to ensure its safety due to its scent tracking skills. This breed is suited for both apartment and country living as long as enough exercise is given daily.

Grooming

Smooth Hair Fox Terrier - This breed requires little grooming. Brush once and day and bathe when needed. This breed does shed daily.

Special Notes

The Smooth Fox Terrier breed is prone to deafness if they are solid white. Please fully educate yourself about this breed prior to adding one to your family to ensure you can promise a life long commitment both physically and financially to your new pup! A properly fenced in yard is highly recommended. All dogs originate from wolves (Canis Lupus). Each breed of dog was originally created by mixing different breeds together in an effort to bring forth certain characteristics. Once a breeder has created acceptable “breed characteristics” within their bloodline and these “breed characteristics” have shown to be reliably reproduced in the offspring for three (3) generations, the bloodline may be upgraded from the category of “foundation stock” to “pure-bred”. The same “pure-bred” breed standards vary from different continents, countries, territories, regions, breed clubs, and canine pure-breed registries depending on the goals of their breeders. Dog DNA testing companies can have accurate results for a specific bloodline of a small colony of dogs. However, there are tens of thousands of different bloodlines in the world which have not yet been tested for marker baseline results by Dog DNA testing companies as of 2017. For this reason Dog DNA testing companies do not guarantee the 100% accuracy of their breed lineage results and will also show different marker results for the same pure-bred breed in different continents, countries, territories, regions, breed clubs, and canine pure-breed registries depending on the goals of their breeders.
