Basset Griffon Vendeen

History

The Basset Griffon Vandeen is a very rare and unique breed of choice in the USA. Originating in France with the now extinct White Bloodhound and White and Tan Italian Bloodhound bloodlines, this breed was used to hunt rabbits and other smaller animals that would burrow.

Appearance

Long and low to the ground, the Basset Griffon Vandeen is typically 13-15 inches in height and 31-40 pounds in weight for both males and females. Available in a base coat of white with any color possible for markings on top, such as but not limited to, blonde, black, brown, brindle, tan and more. This breed has a single layer of shaggy hair with a larger oval shaped head that forms into a scissor bite for its muzzle. Large and long floppy ears fall alongside of their face, while their large dark eyes are accentuated with their shaggy eyebrows. Short, thick legs carry this unique pup, while their tail is a medium length and should always be positioned away and up from their body.

Temperament

This breed has a huge personality for how small it is. Goofy, loving, entertaining, independent and loyal are only a few descriptions of this breeds personality. The Basset Griffon Vandeen is a wonderful addition to any family with children of any age or elderly as long as they are raised along side of them. Good with other dogs and cats, however not recommended for homes with any "rodent" type pets, as they are bred to hunt these! This breed requires a daily walk to ensure the mental and physical well being of the dog, and only positive reinforcement training methods are recommended. This breed is suitable for both apartment and country living situations.

Grooming

This breed does not shed, however due to the type of coat they have, a "pin" brush, or "comb" is needed to complete daily brushing to avoid mating and knots from forming. A trip to the groomer about every 6 months is recommended. Bathe when needed.

Special Notes

The Basset Griffon Vandeen does not do well in hot weather, and prefers cooler temperatures. Please do not keep your pup outdoors or inside with hot temperatures. This breed will wander if not kept on lead or within a properly safe fenced in yard. Please fully educate yourself about this breed prior to adding one to your family to ensure this is the correct breed for your family and that you are able to make a life long commitment to your new addition! All dogs originate from wolves (Canis Lupus). Each breed of dog was originally created by mixing different breeds together in an effort to bring forth certain characteristics. Once a breeder has created acceptable “breed characteristics” within their bloodline and these “breed characteristics” have shown to be reliably reproduced in the offspring for three (3) generations, the bloodline may be upgraded from the category of “foundation stock” to “pure-bred”. The same “pure-bred” breed standards vary from different continents, countries, territories, regions, breed clubs, and canine pure-breed registries depending on the goals of their breeders. Dog DNA testing companies can have accurate results for a specific bloodline of a small colony of dogs. However, there are tens of thousands of different bloodlines in the world which have not yet been tested for marker baseline results by Dog DNA testing companies as of 2017. For this reason Dog DNA testing companies do not guarantee the 100% accuracy of their breed lineage results and will also show different marker results for the same pure-bred breed in different continents, countries, territories, regions, breed clubs, and canine pure-breed registries depending on the goals of their breeders.
